Engage your team with a DJ Battle team building activity

Event and conference mangers are always looking for interesting team building ideas to bond teams and engage their clients.

Popular team building ideas can include; golf days, songwriting sessions, drumming workshops, art and creative sessions, yoga and mediation, sports and race days. But what if you’ve done many of these activities already?

When Rush Events contacted Mash Machine Australia, they were looking for an activity to bookend a full day conference for their client The Made Group. During the day, a soccer match was arranged on the Mornington Peninsula and then later on the evening the staff would be taken to Casa da Playa in Mornington for drinks and dessert. Rush Events wanted to finish the night off with one more team bonding activity which would revolve around music. They had seen Mash Machine in previous events and knew its game play features would appeal to this group.

The DJ Battle utilised 2 Machines at opposite ends of the bar so that we could practice 2 groups at once. Each machine was connected to Bluetooth headsets, with the main machine also hooked into a PA system. This allowed Tim along with our Mash Machine hosts to give the group a introduction how to play and the rules and then allow for the battle rounds to be heard by all the teams.

How to run a DJ Battle team building activity:

  • The group is divided into groups of 4
  • Every 15 minutes, 2 groups would be assigned to a Mash Machine to practice making mash ups
  • The groups choose between 3 different soundbanks (genres) for the performance. These were the most popular on the night Moombahton Spice, Hip to the Hop and Tropical Blender
  • After 15 min, the next 2 groups are assigned to the machines
  • After all the groups have practised, it is time for the battle round
  • All teams gather to the main Mash Machine connected to the PA system. Each group would be given 1min to showcase their DJ skills working together as a team
  • Tim was the MC, bringing a UFC referee voice over  to the battle rounds!
  • The judging panel give points for musicality, creativity and passion.

The outcome

The winning group on the night bought not only a great sense of musicality, demonstrated great team play but it was their passion and dance moves that got them across the line!.

DJ Battles are great fun team building activity. Utilising the unifying power of music, creativity and team work, they could be just what you’re looking for your next conference or event.
